South African Operations

WIPHOLD’s South African portfolio is currently focused on coal mining, lumber, power and cement manufacturing.

Sasol - Coal Mining

In 2007, WIPHOLD entered into a R1.9 billion deal with Sasol Mining. This deal would translate into the creation of the first black-women controlled mining company in South Africa, called Ixia Coal. Sasol would have a 49% ownership in Ixia Coal. The other 51% would be owned by WIPCoal Investments. WIPHOLD is the majority shareholder in WIPCoal
Investments, with 60% shareholding. The other 40% shares are owned by Mining Women Investments.

Mining Women Investments (MWI) is a new entrant created by WIPHOLD. MWI comprises approximately 5,000 rural and peri-urban black women who have not previously participated in BEE transactions. The women are drawn from the provinces of the Free State, Mpumalanga and Limpopo, where Sasol Mining has operations and coal reserves.

Hans Merensky - Forestry, Timber & Agribusiness

WIPHOLD holds a 9% stake in Hans Merensky Group. Hans Merensky Group is South Africa’s largest lumber product manufacturer and sub-tropical fruit grower. In South Africa, Hans Merensky offers customers one of the widest product ranges from various lumber, wood component and veneer products to fresh and processed sub-tropical fruit products. Direct exports from the South African operations serve customer needs in at least 10 different countries.

Jidong cement

Jidong Cement - Cement

In May 2010, WIPHOLD, Continental Cement (Conticem) and Jidong Development Group of China, announced a joint venture to construct a R1.65 billion cement manufacturing plant in Limpopo.

Conticem, a South African limestone mining company, holds 25.1% in the joint venture, with WIPHOLD holding 23,9%. The remaining 51% is held by the Jidong Development Group and the China-Africa-Development Fund (CADFund). Jidong is a leading developer of cement plants and the largest cement producer in Northern China.

The new plant, which will be located 85km north of Brits and adjacent to Conticem’s limestone deposits, will be designed to initially produce 2,500 tons of pure Ordinary Portland
Cement per day, with the capacity to significantly increase production, according to market demand. Jidong will both build and operate the plant, which will be based on the best
technology available.

This venture follows an exclusive agreement between WIPHOLD and Jidong entered into in June 2007, whereby WIPHOLD has imported and distributed Jidong/WIPHOLD branded cement into South Africa, Tanzania and Angola.

ABB Power manufactures and supplies power and automation technology products and specialises in electricity infrastructure and industrial automation projects. The company has manufacturing facilities in South Africa and employs more than 1,500 people.
